03 The Cosmic Symphony: Divine Orchestration of Purusha & Prakriti
BHAKTI YOGA
PRAHLADA’S INSPIRING SPIRITUAL ODYSSEY
In the grand tapestry of existence, the Sankhya-sutra explores the origins of matter and the evolutionary development of the world. At its core, the interplay between Purusha and Prakriti, the dualistic forces, gives rise to creation. The omniscient Lord initiates the sacred dance of creation by upsetting the delicate balance of Prakriti's having three dynamic gunas of Sattva, Rajas, and Thamas. Guiding it all is the all-knowing Purusha, while Prakriti serves as the material foundation.
Embark on a transformative odyssey, unveiling the intricate interplay where cosmic forces intertwine with the dance of life's ebb and flow, embodying resilience and grace. Explore the sacred dance of Purusha and Prakriti, revealing the profound interconnectedness that shapes our very existence. Within this cosmic framework, the Lord manifests His divine army, with each deity representing a specific facet of our existence.
In the grand dance of Purusha and Prakriti, the interplay of Sattva and Rajas sparks the emergence of the primordial intellect, mahat-tattva. This dynamic Buddhi awakens the power of discernment. As Thamas merges with mahat-tattva, the third principle, ahamkara tattva, takes form. Here, individuality ignites, giving birth to the senses of self (I) and possessiveness (mine). When harmoniously blended with Sattva's realm of purity, ahamkara tattva gives rise to ten additional principles, encompassing the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, along with the organs of action. The cosmic dance unfolds, shaping the intricate tapestry of existence by Hrishikesha, the Lord of senses.
A new set of ten principles appears, shrouded in the tamas, or darkness and lethargy. The five subtle components of sensory experience, called tanmatras, and the five inert physical elements - earth, water, fire, air, and ether - meld together. The tanmatras encompass the senses of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. These twenty-four evolutions of Prakriti weave together the constituents of both the macrocosm and the microcosm.
To comprehend this theory of material evolution, we must embark on a systematic exploration, delving into a hierarchical order of presiding deities that extends from the highest realms to the lowest.
The presiding goddess, holding a specific position as the supreme over the entire area of inactive Prakrti, is Goddess Laksmi. For her abundant radiance, eminence, splendor, and wealth, She is praised as Sri. In the divine form of Sankarshana, the Lord's consort Mahalakshmi assumed the guise of Jaya and gave birth to Prana. Goddesses Saraswati and Bharati were destined to become the consorts of Brahma and Prana, respectively. Together, they attained prominence with the power and influence to rule the sphere of maha-tattva.
Garuda, Sesha, and Rudra, emerging from the majestic realms of Maha-tattva, have shouldered the weight of responsibility, taking on the role of Ahamkara-tattva and also presiding over the mind. With their unwavering guidance and watchful gaze, these and other deities oversee the intricate web of material transformations and psychophysical functions, ensuring their harmonious orchestration.
The sixteen principles of mind, sensory organs, organs of action, and inert materials encapsulating the atma make up the Linga Deha. The Atma is conscious, everlasting, and unchanging that can think, make decisions, and take acts thanks to the principles of Buddhi, the faculty of intelligence, and ahamkara, the feeling of ego. It can also learn from its mistakes and advance through experience. They serve as the means to navigate and explore the realm of existence.
The Supreme Lord Himself takes the lead, initiating and presiding over each facet of these divine activities. From the navel of the Lord, a lotus sprouted, symbolizing the use of Prakriti and giving birth to the primordial deity God Brahma, anointing him as the foremost among all beings. Thus, Brahma, in reverence, hailed the Lord as Padmanabha.
Gazing upon the panorama of the Lord's creation, Brahma stood captivated, his words resonating, "Vishwabhavana! You are the source of the entire cosmos.” He continued his solemn prayer by saying, "Suhrtpati! You are our friend, teacher, mother, and father. Sadguru! the compass that keeps me on the straight and narrow of the righteous path. You are my Lord, and you are the one we adore. I find peace and prosperity by taking refuge in your hallowed lotus feet."
In the grand tapestry of existence, beings are influenced by both virtue and vice, fueling an eternal battle within us. Let us delve into instances of presiding deities and their domains.
The majestic God Sun governs the Eyes, illuminating our vision. The enchanting God Moon reigns over the Ears, bestowing the ability to hear. The powerful God Vayu guides the Nose, enabling us to breathe in fragrances. God Varuna governs the Tongue, allowing us to taste the flavors of existence. God Agni oversees the Mouth, empowering us to express ourselves. God Indra commands the Hands, granting us creative power. God Jayanta rules the Legs, providing strength and agility.
The malevolent forces, including Kali, Viprachitti, Narakasura, Kalanemi, and Madhu-Kaitabha, symbolize the adversaries of Lust, Anger, Greed, Delusion, Pride, and Envy. These forces test our determination and hinder our progress, necessitating their defeat.
The Lord's presence is not confined to exalted realms or distant celestial abodes. Dwelling within the Lotus of the Heart, the compassionate Lord and the Goddess Lakshmi hold their abode as Paramatma, intimately connected to our every thought, word, and action. Their divine influence orchestrates the intricate workings of our being, guiding and shaping our existence.
Within this profound framework, we bear witness to the interconnectedness between the cosmic forces and the very essence of our individual existence. It is imperative to work towards the ideal state in which the Jiva and the subtle coverings of Prakriti are uncoupled, resulting in freedom from the cycle of birth and death.
Indeed, the Lord stands unwavering as a divine beacon, emanating impartiality and justice, while showering His warm affection upon every soul. Devoid of favoritism or bias, He harbors no partiality towards anyone, embracing all with equal love and compassion. He stands to embody truth, consciousness, and bliss, radiating these sacred qualities effortlessly. Thus, He is revered and extolled as Achyuta, the infallible one, whose divine presence transcends the limitations of human imperfection.
As the task of creation unfurled, Brahma diligently proceeded, giving birth to ten sons, each emerging from a distinct realm of his divine anatomy. Narada, adorned with celestial melodies, sprung forth from his noble thighs, while Daksha, a prominent progenitor, took form from his persistent thumb. Vasishta, the revered sage, and philosopher, found his being from Brahma's life force, his very Prana. Bhrigu, the Vedic sage of antiquity, emanated from the depths of Brahma's radiant skin, while Kratu, endowed with divine intellect, was born of his blessed hands. Pulaha, another sage of profound wisdom, drew his first breath from Brahma's navel, while Pulastya, with his profound insight, came into existence from Brahma's ears. Angira, the eloquent poet and seer, found his voice in Brahma's sacred mouth, and Atri, whose devotion knew no bounds, descended from Brahma's all-seeing eyes.
Finally, Marichi, the cosmic luminary and erudite mentor, blossomed forth from the very fabric of Brahma's enlightened mind. Dharma, the embodiment of righteousness and moral duty sprang forth from the right side of Brahma's chest, while adharma, the embodiment of unrighteousness, emerged from his very back. Fear emerged from the womb of adharma, casting a shadow on existence and signaling the impending death.
In the realm where passion and ignorance hold sway, a faint glimmer of goodness occasionally emerges. The sons of Brahma embody these varied qualities; some are born in passion and ignorance, while others, like Kardama Rishi, represent goodness, and the Narada Rishi achieves the transcendental state of enlightenment.
Kardama Rishi married Devahuti and shared an intimate relationship. Astonishingly, Kardama planted his seed within Devahuti by dividing it into nine parts. On that very day, she gives birth to nine radiant daughters. Later, these very daughters got married: Kala married Marichi; Anasuya married Atri; Shraddha; married Angira; Havirbhu married Pulastya; Gati married Pulaha; Kriya married Kratu; Khyati married Bhrigu; and Arundhati married Vashistha,
As time's relentless hands cast shadows of impending death, Devahuti trembles with fear. Yet, Kardama holds her hands, whispering solace and assuring that Vishnu, the Supreme Lord, watches over them. With hopeful eyes, Kardama assures her that the divine, with His boundless wisdom and compassion, would soon embrace their beloved boy, bringing light and salvation to their world, with a flicker of hope dancing in his eyes."
In this mortal realm, the Lord manifests in the form of Kapila to illuminate the intricate path of Sankhya, a profound philosophy obscured by the passage of time. As the compassionate guide, Kapila Rishi reintroduces this wisdom, offering humanity a transformative journey toward liberation from the entanglements of material existence. The salient points of His teachings are:
- When one sheds the impurities of lust and greed, born from the illusory identification of the body as the 'self' and material possessions as 'mine,' the mind attains purity. In this purified state, one transcends the realm of fleeting material happiness and distress.
- The Supreme Lord, Paramatma, is the embodiment of transcendence. He exists beyond the sway of material nature and the confines of this perishable world. His resplendent radiance permeates all existence, sustaining the entire creation.
- The magnificence of the Lord is eternally worthy of praise, as His glory magnifies the splendor of His devoted souls. Therefore, meditate upon the Supreme Lord and His cherished devotees. Fixate your mind on the eternal form of the Lord until it becomes unwavering."
Through Kapila's teachings, we are granted the opportunity to attain spiritual harmony, unravel the mysteries of existence, and experience the sublime joy of liberation. May his divine wisdom inspire us to embark on this sacred path of self-realization.
In the tapestry of time's embrace, a divine spectacle unraveled, orchestrated by the benevolent touch of God Sesha. From his celestial essence emerged Shankukarna, a soul destined to serve God Brahma in the revered realm of Satya Loka. Endowed with a celestial gift, he possessed a wondrous ability to shape-shift and embody diverse forms, a vessel of unwavering dedication to fulfilling his divine duties wherever the call arose.
Within the splendid time of Satya Yuga, a tale of enchantment begins its celestial dance. Within the ethereal tapestry of celestial realms, nestled amidst the very heart of a demon clan, Shankukarna assumes a noble incarnation, adorned with the name Prahlada, the luminary protagonist of our ethereal saga.
Meanwhile, Sri Narada, guided by the divine God Brahma, ascended to the revered status of a rishi, a sage of profound spiritual wisdom and enlightenment. With his Mahati Veena resonating in harmonious melody, Narada Rishi, the eternal bard, adorned the heavens with celestial exploits, exuding an unwavering devotion towards the Lord that overflowed from his jubilant heart.
Prahlada, immersed in celestial tales, drank the nectar of divine narratives, woven by the illustrious sage Narada. Each vibrant melody word awakened his soul, kindling a genuine passion for the Lord and unwavering devotion. In these luminescent legends, the essence of spirituality danced, illuminating his path to eternal bliss. In a state of euphoria, the devoted Prahlada added, "I find myself submerged in a holy song of worship dedicated to your exalted name in the depths of my existence. Oh, how my soul rejoices in the knowledge that your holy body is only a reflection of this enormous cosmic manifestation, this intricate tapestry of the material universe. My Lord, I stand in utter amazement at the magnitude of this revelation!”
“Oh, Purusha, the Lord of creation!” said Prahlada, “My heart swells with reverence as I contemplate this sacred truth. In the grand tapestry of existence, I am but a humble witness to your divine artistry. Your cosmic symphony reverberates through my soul, stirring a profound sense of wonder and gratitude.”
"May this prayer serve as an expression of my steadfast dedication and sincere appreciation for the breathtaking beauties surrounding us.” Prahlada prayed, "In your infinite mercy, give me the grace to be ever immersed in the splendor and beauty of your creation." Prahlada prostrated at the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord, saying, "Oh, Supreme Lord, I offer my heartfelt praise and surrender at your lotus feet."
With unrelenting zeal, Prahlada's fervent voice bursts, banishing uncertainties. Wealth, ancestry, austerity, education, strength, allure, and influence are all useless in the Lord's eyes. Even revered priests and wise teachers, adorned with noble virtues, fail without genuine devotion. A humble devotee, regardless of social standing, with boundless love, surpasses all.
In the realm of self-discovery, we seek enlightenment and understanding of our place in the cosmos. Through prayer and devotion, we find guidance on the transcendent path, attaining inner serenity and connection with the divine. Overcoming inner enemies, we progress toward enlightenment, where our truth unfolds.
Every soul has a hallowed chamber where the Lord lives and weaves destinies. Jivas set out on karmic adventures, unraveling progress and spiritual evolution with the Lord as their ever-present companion. The riches of transformation are revealed via bhakti yoga.
In devotion to Hrishikesha, the Lord of senses, devotees achieve self-surrender, purifying themselves and their lineage. Pride consumes even priests and spiritual teachers. The divine Lord radiates eternal contentment, independent of service.
"The practice of Bhakti Yoga weaves together the threads of love, devotion, and surrender, creating a vibrant and transformative path toward self-realization and God-realization.”
