Srimad Bhagavata Skanda 2 – Manifestations of Speech, Vitality, and Creation”

 

Srimad Bhagavata, the pinnacle of Puranic wisdom, eradicates ignorance and nurtures devotion. It unveils the divine, cleansing sins and guiding seekers to truth. Rooted in Dharma, it inspires sincere worship, free from jealousy or deception, ensuring spiritual progress. Composed by Sage Vyasa, it solidifies bhakti and reveals the Lord within.

॥ Hari Om ॥

जन्माद्यस्य यतोऽन्वयादितरतश्चार्थेष्वभिज्ञः स्वराट्
तेने ब्रह्महृदा य आदिकवये मुह्यन्ति यत्सूरयः ।
तेजोवारिमृदां यथा विनिमयो यत्र त्रिसर्गोऽमृषा
धाम्ना स्वेन सदा निरस्तकुहकं सत्यं परं धीमहि ॥ १॥

"The Lord Sriman Narayana is the very essence of divine virtues, self-sustained, radiant with light, overflowing with boundless knowledge and bliss. He is the ‘Creator of The Universe,’ which encompasses countless forms of Himself, both the living beings and the non-living things. He sustains, transforms, and governs it all — bestowing both ignorance and wisdom, binding beings to the cycle of birth and death, and offering liberation to those who seek moksha. Thus, He is the Param, the Supreme.

In the dawn of creation, He manifested the first being, the four-faced Brahma, and gifted him the knowledge required to bring the cosmos into being. Through His blessings, wisdom unfolds. Though He seeks no gain for Himself, He creates and upholds the cosmos for the welfare of all living beings, endowed with all the wisdom necessary for such a grand design. For He is neither a juggler, nor a deceiver, crafting illusions in this world. Untainted by any flaw, He is the Satyam — the absolute truth.

With reverence, let us meditate upon Lord Sriman Narayana, the embodiment of Satyam and Param."

धर्मः प्रोज्झितकैतवोऽत्र परमो निर्मत्सराणां सतां
वेद्यं वास्तवमत्र वस्तु शिवदं तापत्रयोन्मूलनम् ।
श्रीमद्भागवते महामुनिकृते किं वा परैरीश्वरः
सद्यो हृद्यवरुध्यतेऽत्र कृतिभिः शुश्रूषुभिस्तत्क्षणात् ॥

"The Srimad Bhagavata encompasses the entirety of Dharma, safeguarding the soul from falling by purifying it, and guiding the individual soul towards the divine path leading to the Lord. This sacred path calls for unwavering devotion — a life dedicated to honoring, worshipping, admiring, and praising the Lord, free from jealousy, expectation, or deceit. As one treads upon this path, all obstacles dissolve, prosperity is bestowed, and the heart becomes imbued with virtue, turning one into a Sajjana, a virtuous soul. Above all, it fortifies bhakti, deepening one’s devotion.

Thus, the Srimad Bhagavata, composed by the Lord in the form of sage Veda Vyasa shines as a beacon of truth, revealing Himself as Supreme Soul eternally resides in the heart of every living being."

नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् ।
देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत् ॥

"Salutations to Lord Sriman Narayana, the eternal support of all, including the divine Goddess Lakshmi, and the very essence of the Srimad Bhagavata. Salutations to Lord Veda Vyasa, the revered composer of this sacred scripture. Salutations to Devi, the Goddess of Fortune, who perpetually serves the Lord and bestows the blessings of abundance upon all Bhagavatas, enriching them with the divine knowledge of Srimad Bhagavata — a wealth that encompasses Jnana, Bhakti, and Vairagya.

Salutations to the Gods Brahma and Vayu, the noblest of beings. Salutations to Sarasvati, the Goddess of Knowledge and Devotion, who inspires both wisdom and bhakti. Salutations to the divine Garuda, Sesha and Shiva, the greatest among the Vaishnavas.

Salutations to the Srimad Bhagavata, the sacred text that brings forth eternal victory and spiritual triumph."

यद्भनौ यत्क्र्शानौ यदमृतकिरणे यद् ग्रहेषू दितेषु
ज्योतिर्यत्तारकासु प्रथितमणिषु यद्यच्च सौदामिनिषु ।
सम्भूयौतत् समस्तं त्वदमितह्रदयाकाशनिर्यत्प्रकाशे
धीर श्रीराघवेन्द्रव्रतिवरभजते हन्त खद्योतरीतिम् ॥

The brightness of the Sun, Fire, Moon, Planets, Stars, Gems, Precious stones and Lightening put together is just like a firefly near the astonishing brilliance emanating from your lotus of Heart wherein the five forms of Lord Sri Rama, Sri Narasimha, Sri Veda Vyasa, Sri Krishna and Sriman Narayana are present in a significant way bestowing you the Brahmavarchas or the Sacred Knowledge.

Gentle & Holy Sage, Sri Raghavendra, I worship you by surrendering myself.

As Devarishi Narada listens with wonder, Brahma unfolds the divine secret: that every form, sense, and force of the universe springs forth from the Virat Purusha—the Lord whose body is the cosmos itself. In this section of the Bhagavata, Brahma describes how speech, taste, vitality, sight, sound, touch, and even the resources of nature arise from the Lord’s limbs. The Sun, the Moon, the holy rivers, the herbs, the protectors of dharma, and even the cycles of birth and death—all are manifestations of His supreme will. Through this grand vision, the Bhagavata teaches that nothing in creation is apart from Him, and yet He remains forever transcendent, the Sarvottama—Supreme beyond all.

ब्रह्मोवाच
वाचां वह्नेर्मुखं क्षेत्रं छन्दसां सप्त धातवः ।
हव्यकव्यामृतान्नानां जिह्वा सर्वरसस्य च ॥ १॥

Continuing his reply, God Brahmā said, "Devarishi Narada! From the mouth of the Virat Purusha manifested speech (vak) along with its presiding deity, Agni, the god of fire. Along with them arose the seven sacred Vedic metres—Gayatri, Ushnik, Anuṣṭubh, Bṛhati, Pankti, Trishtubh, and Jagati—each carrying the vibrations of the eternal Vedas.

From His mouth also manifested food (anna), taste (rasa), the sensory organ of taste (the tongue), and Varuṇa, the deity presiding over taste. These manifestations were not only for the living beings on earth but also for the Pitrdevatas—the deities of the forefathers—and for the celestial gods.

Thus, through the mouth of the Cosmic Person, speech, nourishment, sensory faculties, and the divine guardians of these experiences came into existence, all perfectly ordered by His supreme will."

सर्वासूनां च वायोश्च तन्नासे परमायने ।
अश्विनोरोषधीनां च घ्राणो मोदप्रमोदयोः ॥ २॥

God Brahma continued, "O Devarishi Narada! From the two nostrils of the Virāṭ Puruṣa manifested the five vital life-forces—Prana, Apāna, Vyāna, Udāna, and Samāna—which sustain all living beings. Along with them emerged their presiding deity, Mukhya Prana, the chief of all vital energies.

From His nostrils also arose the sensory organ of smell (the nose) and its presiding deities, the divine twin Aśvinī Kumāra. Further, from this region manifested all medicinal herbs and plants, bearing both common and special fragrances.

Thus, the faculties of vitality, healing, and the sense of smell—all essential to life and health—originated from the sacred breath of the Cosmic Person, each under the governance of the Lord’s eternal will."

रूपाणां तेजसां चक्षुर्दिवः सूर्यस्य चाक्षिणी ।
कर्णौ दिशां च तीर्थानां श्रोत्रमाकाशशब्दयोः ।
तद्गात्रं वस्तुसाराणां सौभगस्य च भाजनम् ॥ ३॥

"O Devarishi Narada! From the sensory organs of sight of the Virāṭ Puruṣa manifested form (rūpa), brilliance (tejas), the physical eyes themselves, the heavens (divya loka), and the Sun (Sūrya), the source of light for all worlds.

From His sensory organs of hearing emerged in all the directions, the sacred tīrthas—the divine holy places endowed with the power to redeem sins—the physical ears, the various types of sounds, and the entire range of speech and vocabulary used by beings.

Indeed, His divine form has been the very foundation for all that exists in this vast cosmos—every living and nonliving thing derives its beauty, form, and perfection from Him. In every sight, every sound, and every act of grace in the world, the presence of the Supreme Lord is reflected." God Brahmā continued.

त्वगस्य स्पर्शवायोश्च सर्वमेधस्य चैव हि ।
रोमाण्युद्भिज्जजातीनां यैर्वा यज्ञस्तु सम्भृतः ॥ ४॥

"O Devarishi Narada! From the sense organ of touch—the skin of the Virāṭ Puruṣa—manifested all forms of sacrifice (yajña), including the symbolic fire sacrifices that uphold dharma. Along with these, the sensory faculty of touch, Vāyu—the air element—and its movements emerged, carrying life and sustaining existence.

From the hair upon His divine skin sprouted seeds, shrubs, herbs, creepers, plants, vanaspati (trees bearing fruit without flowering), and trees. Thus, the entire abundance of plant life, which nourishes all beings and sustains the cycle of life, sprang forth from Him alone.

In this way, through the very touch and outer covering of the Cosmic Person, sacrifice, vitality, and the bounty of nature were born, each moving under His eternal command."

केशश्मश्रुनखान्यस्य शिलालोहाभ्रविद्युताम् ।
बाहवो लोकपालानां प्रायशः क्षेमकर्मणाम् ॥ ५॥
विक्रमो भूर्भुवः स्वश्च क्षेमस्य शरणस्य च ।
सर्वकामवरस्यापि हरेश्चरण आस्पदम् ॥६॥

"O Devarishi Narada!" said God Brahma. "From the hair, beard, mustache, and fingernails of the Virāṭ Puruṣa manifested the clouds, lightning, mountains, rocks, iron, and other minerals that form the wealth of resources on Mother Earth.

From His shoulders manifested the protectors of the worlds—the kings, soldiers, police, and security forces—those entrusted with maintaining order and guarding dharma across the realms.

The very movement of the Lord, His divine walking, upholds and protects the three planes: Bhūḥ (earth), Bhuvaḥ (sky), and Svaḥ (heaven). His steps are the source of their stability and strength.

Therefore, O sage, by fully surrendering at the lotus feet of Lord Śrī Hari, seeking His refuge and protection, all forms of fear are destroyed. His grace fulfills all noble wishes and grants true safety, beyond the reach of worldly anxieties."

अपां वीर्यस्य सर्गस्य पर्जन्यस्य प्रजापतेः ।
पुंसः शिश्न उपस्थस्तु प्रजात्यानन्दनिर्वृतेः ॥ ७॥
पायुर्यमस्य मित्रस्य परिमोक्षस्य नारद ।
हिंसाया निरृतेर्मृत्योर्निरयस्य गुदं स्मृतः ॥ ८॥
पराभूतेरधर्मस्य तमसश्चापि पश्चिमः ।
नाड्यो नदनदीनां तु गोत्राणामस्थिसंहतिः ॥ ९॥

God Brahmā continued, "O Devarishi Narada! From the genitals of the Virāṭ Puruṣa arose water, semen, clouds, and rain—the essential elements for fertility and the sustenance of life. From this sacred source also emerged the Prajāpatis, the divine progenitors entrusted with the ongoing process of creation. His generative power is the origin of birth, and the pleasure associated with creation too is rooted in Him.

From His organ of excretion came forth Yama, the god of death, Mitra, and the function of elimination. His anus is the source of violence, misfortune, and the netherworlds—those lower realms that uphold the cosmic principle of justice and consequence.

From His back manifested failure, immorality, and ignorance, along with their presiding forces. From His veins flow the great rivers and rivulets, spreading nourishment across the earth. Upon His bones stand the hills, mountains, and mountain ranges—the vast pillars of the physical world.

Yet in all these manifestations, the Supreme Lord remains utterly untouched by impurity. He is the Sarvaniyamaka—the eternal regulator. Even these lowly or fearsome aspects, in truth, arise by His will and are governed by His divine purpose."

अव्यक्तरससिन्धूनां भूतानां निधनस्य च ।
उदरं विदितं पुंसो हृदयं मनसः पदम् ॥ १०॥
धर्मस्य मम तुभ्यं च कुमाराणां भवस्य च ।
विज्ञानस्य च सत्त्वस्य परस्यात्मा परायणम् ॥ ११॥

God Brahmā continued, "O Devarishi Narada! Within the stomach of the Virāṭ Puruṣa reside the primordial elements—Ākāśa, Vāyu, Agni, Āpah, and Pṛthvī—in their subtle forms, along with their productive forces: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. All chemical elements, minerals, the seas and oceans, all living beings, and even their death—all dwell within Him, sustained in His boundless form.

His heart is the source of the mind (manas) for all living beings—a seat of thought, perception, and emotion.

The birthplace of righteousness (dharma), which alone protects beings from falling into the lower worlds, is He Himself. Me, you, the four Sanakādi Kumāras—Sanaka, Sanātana, Sanat-kumāra, and Sanandana—along with Śaṅkara, science, the mind and memory of all living beings, and more—all have their origin in Him.

He is the Supreme Soul, the Paramātmā, dwelling within all beings—ever present, ever distinct, yet intimately pervading all as the one true sustainer and witness."

अहं भवान् भवश्चैव त इमे मुनयोऽग्रजाः ।
सुरासुरनरा नागाः खगा मृगसरीसृपाः ॥ १२॥
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो यक्षा रक्षोभूतगणोरगाः ।
पशवः पितरः सिद्धा विद्याध्राश्चारणा द्रुमाः ॥ १३॥
अन्ये च विविधा जीवा जलस्थलनभौकसः ।
ग्रहर्क्षकेतवस्तारास्तडितः स्तनयित्नवः ॥ १४॥
सर्वं पुरुष एवेदं भूतं भव्यं भवच्च यत् ।
तेनेदमावृतं विश्वं वितस्तिमधितिष्ठति ॥ १५॥

"What more can I say, O Narada!" Lord Brahmā declared. "You, I, your four elder brothers—the Sanakādi Kumāras—the Devas, humans, beasts, serpents, birds, animals, reptiles, Gandharvas, Apsarās, Yakṣas, Rakṣasas, Bhūtagaṇas, Uragas, Paśus, Pitṛs, Siddhas, Vidyādharas, and Cāraṇas—all beings of every kind and category are but limbs of the Virāṭ Puruṣa.

The trees, the sky (Ākāśa), the waters (Āpah), all creatures upon the earth, the celestial planets, the luminous bodies, the stars, their trailing lights, the sparkling dots that adorn the night sky, the clouds heavy with lightning—all of these are expressions within His cosmic form.

Whatever has existed in the past, whatever shall come to be in the future, and all that exists now—all emanates from Him. This entire creation is within Him, yet He remains beyond it.

Indeed, He is not limited by the universe—He is ten fingers beyond (daśāṅgula) all this: transcendent, unbounded, and untouched. He is the Sarvottama, the Supreme Being, incomparable and eternally distinct from His creation, though fully sustaining it."

Through these revelations, Brahmā reminds Nārada—and us—that nothing in this universe is independent. Speech, vitality, sight, sound, touch, nature’s abundance, the guardians of dharma, and even the cycles of birth and death—all flow from the Lord’s cosmic form. Yet, the Supreme remains untouched, transcendent, and ever distinct from His creation. To recognize this truth is to live with reverence: seeing every element of life as sacred, and turning in humility to the Sarvottama—Śrī Hari, the eternal source, sustainer, and protector of all.”

Hence, let us pray:
अस्पृश-दोषैर्गन्धाय कल्याण-गुणसिन्धवे ।
नमो नमो भक्त-मुक्ति-दायन-शेष-शयने ॥
O Lord Ranganātha, Anantaśayana, the Immaculate One! Untouched by any defect—even by the air that carries impure odors. You are an infinite ocean of auspiciousness. To You, who grants liberation to Your devotees and reclines upon Śeṣa, I offer my repeated salutations.
